Walking & Hiking in and Around Kaikoura
Enjoy the breath-taking scenery of Kaikōura when exploring on foot. Kaikoura has a great variety of coastal walks. You can enjoy the rugged landscape whilst spotting marine life from the coastline. New Zealand Fur Seals being numerous all around the Peninsula and a host of marine birds throughout the Kaikoura District.
Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway
- A 50-minute walk with interpretation panels from town to Point Kean.
- Enjoy amazing views and the seal colony. Alternatively, start from the car park at South Bay.
The track starts at the carpark at the base of Mt Fyffe which is approximately 10 minutes drive from the Kaikoura township. The picnic area at the car park affords great views over Kaikoura. The walk is a 45 minute lop walk through forest with a large variety of natives.
The track is a one hour forty five minute return loop, initially over steep farmland and then the track takes you through the regenerating forest of Fyffe-Palmer Scenic Reserve. The track affords excellent views looking back over Kaikoura. The track starts at the carpark at the base of Mt Fyffe which is approximately 10 minutes drive from the Kaikoura township.
Puhi Puhi Reserve
A 30-minute well-marked loop track through the Puhi Puhi Scenic reserve. The track starts in the Puhi Puhi Valley approximately 12 kilometers north of Kaikoura.
Mount Fyffe Hutt
Hiking on a 4wd track from the base of Mount Fyffe the summit is an 8- hour return trip with a great lookout approximately one hours walk from the car park. The track starts at the carpark at the base of Mt Fyffe which is approximately 10 minutes-drive from the Kaikoura township.
